Using Profiles to Extend the Value of Your Enterprise Plan

A canoe expedition guiding service in northern Maine operates the premier canoe experience on the Allagash River. The multi-day trip winds through the vast  northern Maine wilderness, offering customers exceptional wildlife viewing and fishing in some of the most remote parts of the eastern United States. Cell phone service is very limited, and often not available for multiple days at a time. During peak season, the guiding service shuttles 3-5 trips to the river every day, relying on inReach to track people and equipment, coordinate pickup/drop-offs, and as the main form of communication between guides, customers and the headquarters.

The inReach administrator at the guiding service has built multiple profiles based on the most common uses in the company. The Basic River Trip profile removes all of the features except for Messaging, SOS, Compass and Waypoints. This prevents any of the employees or customers from over-using data, posting to social media, or adjusting settings that they don’t have permission to use, such as Tracking. The Advanced River Trip profile is for the trips that require more functionality, and is offered to customers at a higher price. This profile contains all of the features of the Basic River Trip profile, but adds in Tracking, which allows for live tracking and location sharing on MapShare.

Each time a customer returns a device to the guiding service, the administrator resets the device to clear any history from the previous trip and syncs the device to enterprise.delorme.com via USB to configure the device for the next trip. In less than ten minutes, the device is ready to go for the next day.

By using the Profile tool, the guiding service quickly resets the rented device back to a desired configuration, and with the reduced set of features on the device they are able train their customers only on the important features of the device. The guiding service has leveraged their investment in inReach technology to streamline their operations, and are providing customers with a lifesaving product at the same time.
