Why does the Empire use sentient labor in its prison instead of droids? I’ve seen that question pop up a lot and the answer is…because they can. The heist on Aldhani has brought in an influx of prisoners. They might as well use them! Just because droid technology exists doesn’t mean it’s the most efficient use of resources. Droids cost money. They can break down. They need maintenance. They can only be pushed as far as their programming allows. But sentients? They’re coming into the prisons for free. Sure, you need to keep them fed and on their feet, but they can be intimidated and pushed and motivated into working harder. They compete against one another. If they break down or die, the Empire can replace them instantly. The Empire uses sentient labor instead of droids because they can. It’s cruel. But the cruelty is the point.
