Proposed route of the Collins Overland Telegraph, a telegraph line (bolded here in black) that was intended to stretch from California to Moscow, going through Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Russian America, under the Bering Strait and over Siberia. The project was abandoned in 1867 as an economic failure, however its initial construction phases involved many important exploratory expeditions through Siberia.
