Registry Platform merges GIS and BIM

Registry Platform interface

While the definition of BIM and GIS integration is not totally clear, I would like to assert that the OGC Registry Platform is well down the road of integrating GIS and BIM.

OGC Registry Platform supports the concept of Registry-Repository. This means that the Registry Platform objects can describe entities in the local Registry Platform repository, or in any number of external repositories managed by someone else. The Registry Platform repository can hold BIM-encoded models in any format including open and proprietary binary encodings, as well as open standard BIM encodings such as IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) and CityGML. The associated registry objects can themselves have geometric properties and hence be used to spatial index objects in the repository. For example, one might have Building registry objects with a polygonal extent (e.g. building footprints), that point at CityGML encoded models of the complete building in the repository. Spatial queries can then return either the two dimensional foot prints (along with associated roads, parks etc.) or complete CityGML models of any part of a city.

At the same time, the Registry Platform can harvest (import) data directly from an ESRI GeoDatabase and store this information as registry objects, without associated repository content.

For 3D City models, the Registry Platform provides a super fast QA and rendering engine for CityGML which is many times faster than the competition. Registry Platform proves that software for open BIM standards like CityGML can be pretty and fast, with support for window reflections, shadows, etc.

The Registry Platform uses a NoSQL data model that combines data semantics and geography together, and makes it easy to link materials information, construction process information, and people roles to the built environment, at any stage of its life cycle.

With 2D GIS data, the Registry Platform provides full transactional update across the Internet using XML based messages conforming to the OGC CSW-ebRIM standard. This is matched by powerful query capabilities using taxonomic, geospatial, object property, relationship and free text query components.

The Registry Platform objects currently support GML simple features for geometry (any number of geometry properties) but this can easily be extended to support other geometries such as circles, arcs, rectangles etc.

The Registry Platform provides several models for BIM-GIS integration. Conversion of BIM and GIS data into registry objects. Storage of 3D models in the associated repository with indexing by the registry objects.
