Galdos prepares to dive into the Internet of Things with INdicio

Galdos has been closely following the developments in the Internet of Things (IoT) since the term first surfaced in 1999. Ron Lake, our Founder and CEO, first blogged about GeoWeb and the “Internet of Things” in his post of December 2009.

The Role of Registries in IoT

Part of the interest taken by Galdos in the IoT is based on our work in developing some of the standards that support it. Recent blog posts (Towards a Universal Data Interchange Standard Factory and Standardizing IoT via the OGC Registry Platform) have been talking about the need for some agreement on standards for the IoT to support interoperability and connectivity, and about several very important roles that registries can play.

The proliferation of different devices and device types calls for some standardized way of identifying them and documenting their capabilities so that they can connect to the many applications and web services that are being created daily. What better way to do this than through a registry of devices? The security of individual devices is not compromised, but the characteristics of each device are recorded and can be accessed by developers building services.

IoT and the Future with Registries

Galdos designed the INdicio™ Registry based on standards, recognizing that standardized data was the best way to support interoperability. For IoT devices to easily connect to each other and to available web services and applications, they will need to be able to consume the same data. Web services will not be able to serve data in as many different formats as there are devices. Also, without some agreement about standard measurements, the potential for possibly fatal accidents to happen exists if devices are not using the same measurement system and location references.

With the recent release of INdicio R3, Galdos has a solid registry product that can fulfill many of the needs of the IoT infrastructure for these shared common data resources.
