A Boy and His Blob rated for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Vita, PCs

Classic 8-bit platformer A Boy and His Blob will stage a revival on PCs and modern consoles, according to content ratings recently issued by German classifications board USK (via Destructoid).

Publisher Majesco previously revealed that the series was due to return by the end of 2016, and this week’s classifications narrow down A Boy and His Blob‘s target platforms to the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and PCs.

A Boy and His Blob, originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, put players in control of a young boy from Earth and his alien blob companion. The blob character is able to assume different forms after eating specifically flavored jelly beans, allowing the boy to cross gaps, defeat enemies, and solve traversal-oriented puzzles throughout the game’s world.

Developer WayForward resurrected the series for a 2009 Nintendo Wii release featuring streamlined gameplay and updated graphics. The Wii version of A Boy and His Blob limited players in the types of jelly beans used throughout each level, and puzzles were more straightforward and level-based compared to previous series entries.

A Boy and His Blob has attempted several comebacks in the decades following its NES debut. An in-progress Nintendo DS sequel was in the works but was ultimately cancelled, and a similar reboot for the Nintendo 3DS also failed to launch at retail.

The series’ original publisher Absolute Entertainment followed up on the 8-bit A Boy and His Blob with a Game Boy sequel in 1991. Absolute closed its doors in 1995, and Majesco subsequently acquired the rights to the franchise.

Currently, it’s unclear whether the upcoming multiplatform A Boy and His Blob release is a sequel, a remake, or an adaptation of WayForward’s 2009 Wii game. WayForward has not revealed whether it is affiliated with the project, and Majesco has not named the developer in charge of the upcoming release.

A release date for A Boy and His Blob has not been announced.
