When is your phone getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow?

After months of anticipation, Android 6.0 Marshmallow is finally upon us, which means manufacturers are in a rush to determine which of their phones will be bestowed with Google’s latest version of its mobile operating system … and which will be shunned. There are bound to be casualties, but most of the big-name phones will get the update. So let’s dig through it all and find out whether Marshmallow will make it to your smartphone or tablet.

We’ll update this post regularly with new Android 6.0-compatible devices as manufacturers make announcements. You can also check out our numerous guides on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which are listed below:

Google Nexus and Play Edition devices

When Google revealed the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P — both of which will come with Android 6.0 Marshmallow pre-installed — the search giant also announced that the following older Nexus devices would receive the update starting on October 5:

  • Nexus 6
  • Nexus 9
  • Nexus 5
  • Nexus 7 (2013)
  • Nexus Player

Unfortunately, Marshmallow will not make its way to the Nexus 4, the original Nexus 7, or the Nexus 10. As such, if you have any of these three devices and want some Marshmallow goodness, you’ll have to turn to the rooting community and get your hands dirty.

In addition, there’s no word on whether most Google Play Edition (GPE) devices — which include the Sony Xperia Z Ultra GPE, Moto G GPE, and the Samsung Galaxy S4 GPE — will receive the Marshmallow update.

Motorola

Motorola is also known for its timely updates in recent years, so it’s not surprising to learn that Motorola will bring Marshmallow to a swath of devices early on, which include:

  • 2015 Moto X Pure Edition
  • 2015 Moto X Style
  • 2015 Moto X Play
  • 2014 Moto X Pure Edition in the U.S.
  • 2014 Moto X in Latin America, Europe, and Asia
  • 2015 Moto G
  • 2014 Moto G and Moto G with 4G LTE
  • Droid Turbo
  • 2014 Moto Maxx
  • 2014 Moto Turbo
  • Nexus 6

The biggest omissions to the list are the U.S. carrier versions of the 2014 Moto X, though Motorola stated that “things may change” on that front. Also missing are both 2014 and 2015 versions of the Moto E, as well as the original Moto X and Moto G. Hopefully these devices will be added in the future.

HTC

In accordance with its 90-day update guarantee, HTC’s promised to upgrade a bunch of devices to Marshmallow in the coming months. It cautioned, though, that updates would be predicated on carrier cooperation.

  • One M9
  • One M8
  • One M9+
  • One E8
  • One M8 EYE
  • Butterfly 3
  • Desire 826
  • Desire 820
  • Desire 816

As for the Google Play Edition of the One M8? It’ll receive Android Marshmallow in October, HTC Vice President of Product Management Mo Versi confirmed via Twitter. The One M7 isn’t so fortunate: HTC said that the two-year-old phone “falls outside its lifecycle’s window for updates.”

Sony

Sony has stepped up its Android upgrade game over the past several years, and Marshmallow is no exception. In all, the Japan-based electronics maker plans to update a whopping 14 devices — a mix of phones, tablets, and phablets, which date back to as early as March 2014.

  • Xperia Z5
  • Xperia Z5 Compact
  • Xperia Z5 Premium
  • Xperia Z4 Tablet
  • Xperia Z3+
  • Xperia Z3
  • Xperia Z3 Compact
  • Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
  • Xperia Z2
  • Xperia Z2 Tablet
  • Xperia M5
  • Xperia C5 Ultra
  • Xperia M4 Aqua
  • Xperia C4

Sony hasn’t released anything resembling a timeframe for the device updates, but the company’s already put the wheels in motion. On Monday, it released Marshmallow binaries — the foundational bits of the upgrade — for the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact.

Samsung

We’ve yet to hear official word from Samsung as far as Marshmallow’s concerned, but the intrepid folks at SamMobile and YouMobile have obtained lists of smartphones likely to get an upgrade. They caution it’s preliminary.

  • Galaxy S6 Edge+
  • Galaxy S6 Edge
  • Galaxy S6
  • Galaxy S5 LTE-A
  • Galaxy S5 neo
  • Galaxy S5
  • Galaxy Note Edge
  • Galaxy Note 5
  • Galaxy Note 4
  • Galaxy Alpha
  • Galaxy Tab A

Word from Samsung is expected in the comings weeks, but it’s worth noting that Samsung supports a massive number of phone and tablet variants globally. Differences in hardware and carrier often lead to staggered — and sometimes delayed — upgrades across its portfolio of devices. Be prepared to play the waiting game.

LG

LG said on Oct. 14 that the G4 will get Marshmallow incredibly soon — within the next week, in fact, starting with owners in Poland and branching out to folks in the Americas, Asia, and Europe a tad later. “By working closely with Google, LG has been able to bring Android 6.0 to the G4 ahead of any of our competitors,” said LG’s vice president of marketing Chris Yie in a statement.

LG otherwise remains mum on which of its phones are getting Marshmallow, but support pages on T-Mobile and LG Korea’s website may have spilled the beans. Here are the devices they show:

  • G4
  • G3
  • G Stylo

Neither of the aforementioned sources list the G2, unfortunately, but that’s not entirely unexpected: The G3’s predecessor is just over two years old, which is about LG’s cutoff range for updates.

That’s all the Android 6.0 update news we have for now, but we’ll keep updating this post regularly, so check back soon. You can also check out our numerous guides on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which are listed below:
