Skullgirls creator releasing free PS4 prototype of next game

Lab Zero Games announced that it will release a free prototype version of its side-scrolling action-RPG Indivisible for the PlayStation 4 in a bid to solicit pledges for its ongoing crowdfunding campaign at Indiegogo.

The release serves as a last-ditch effort to push Indivisible past its funding goal ahead of the campaign’s conclusion later this month. Currently, backers have pledged over $550,000 toward Indivisible‘s goal of $1.5 million.

Announced in July, Indivisible is the next project from Skullgirls creator Lab Zero Games. Skullgirls, a 2D fighter for consoles, previously solicited pledges via Indiegogo for the creation of DLC characters. The campaign quintupled its initial funding goal, leading the team to produce the expanded editions Skullgirls: Encore and Skullgirls: 2nd Encore in the months afterward.

Despite positive buzz from critics and a successful grassroots awareness campaign, Indivisible has not enjoyed the same level of success via Indiegogo. Barring a sudden outpouring of fan support, Indivisible is unlikely to meet its goal before the campaign wraps up on November 15th, given its current funding trajectory.

The upcoming PlayStation 4 version of Indivisible will be an adaptation of a previously released prototype for Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. Available as a free download, Indivisible‘s prototype gives players an early glimpse at the game’s combat system and exploration elements. The game cites inspiration from classics like Valkyrie Profile and Super Metroid, and boasts “the unique character, world, and gameplay depth Lab Zero is known for.”

Though the prototype received a positive response from fans, Lab Zero notes that Indivisible will not enter production if its Indiegogo funding campaign fails. The studio has entered a publishing partnership with 505 Games, and will only receive publisher backing if an initial round of crowdsourced funding is successful.

The PlayStation 4 version of Indivisible‘s prototype will launch via the PlayStation Network as a free download on November 3rd.
