Ubisoft celebrates Rayman’s 20th anniversary with a visit from his creator

Mario and Sonic might be the first characters you think of when you hear “2D platforming,” but Ubisoft’s Rayman has been defying physics for quite a long time, as well. In fact, the publisher celebrated the series’ 20th anniversary on November 17 with a livestream featuring creator Michel Ancel.

As you can see in the link above, the livestream begins with the limbless hero’s exploits in the original Rayman on PlayStation before jumping to the newest game in the series, Rayman Adventures. Unlike Jungle Run and Fiesta Run, the new game is not an auto-runner, instead playing very similarly to both Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends. However, the added touch support that Adventures brings enabled Ubisoft to add in new features impossible on most traditional controllers, including special swipe-based attacks that enable the game to remain intuitive enough for mobile play.

“As a fan of Rayman from Day one, it’s an always exciting and special moment for me when we welcome a new installment in the series,” says Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. Of course, a fully-featured mobile game probably wasn’t what most fans had in mind for a follow-up to the critically acclaimed Legends, but the game failed to hit sales expectations, even after expanding from a Wii U exclusive into a multiplatform release.

Michel Ancel, meanwhile, is splitting his time between Ubisoft Montpellier, where he has worked for several decades, and his new studio, Wild Sheep. The indie developer announced its first project, Wild, as a PlayStation 4 exclusive last year, and it looks to put a unique spin on the “life simulation” genre — instead of simply surviving in the wilderness as one creature, you’re free to control any animal.

Rayman Adventures releases for mobile devices on December 3, and if you have an Apple TV, you can play it early: right now, in fact!
