E! and Joel McHale will say goodbye to The Soup this year

E! is taking The Soup off its menu. The network announced today that the Joel McHale-hosted show will air its final episode on December 18, capping off an 11-year run.

Known for satirizing pop culture, The Soup launched in 2004 with McHale as host. Although his contract was extended last year to run through 2016, according to Deadline, the series won’t make it beyond 2015. It’s unclear what prompted the decision, but one certainty is that fans will now have to look elsewhere for their weekly dose of sarcastic commentary.

In addition to poking fun at celebrities, commercials, and more, The Soup also welcomed a variety of famous faces, not to mention those seeking notoriety. Among those who visited the show over the years are Lucy Lawless, RuPaul, Kal Penn, Larry King, Marilyn Manson, Alison Brie, Tyrese Gibson, Anderson Cooper, and Shaquille O’Neal.

The Soup‘s official Twitter account commiserated with fans after news broke, sharing a photo of a “bottle of soup” (aka Jim Beam) that they’ll be using to cope.

The Soup is a revamp of Talk Soup, which ran for 11 seasons from 1991 to 2002.  Its hosts included Greg Kinnear, John Henson, Hal Sparks, and Aisha Tyler. Both The Soup and Talk Soup scored at least one Emmy nomination over the years, with The Soup receiving its nod in 2014.

The cancellation of The Soup will be hard on McHale fans, especially since it looks like Community, the sitcom he has starred on for the past six seasons, is unlikely to be renewed for season 7. The series was previously “saved” by Yahoo Screen after being cancelled by NBC, only to result in a substantial monetary loss for Yahoo.

Catch the series finale of The Soup on December 18.
