I wanted to give a big thanks to everyone one who participated in Geography Awareness Week events around the world. Boundless fully embraces promoting geo-literacy, and we were happy to participate in several events throughout the globe. Here are some highlights of the events our team supported last week:
GIS Day at George Mason University
Joe Miller and I attended GIS Day at George Mason University in Virginia. GIS Day at GMU included a career and internship fair, a student map competition, a professional panel on landing a job in GIS, and even an OSM Mapathon event on Friday. There were about 25 or so organizations represented, and well over 150 students who attended. I had the opportunity to interact with some amazing undergraduate and graduate students, and spurred some really good conversations about how to use OpenGeo Suite for many areas of geospatial analysis.
GIS Day in Australia
Dave Gibbon supported a multitude of events in Australia, each with tremendous turnout. The events in Australia make it the largest GIS day event in the world. There were exhibitors from all over Australia, and even one from New York. The event opened with speeches from leaders of Brisbane City, the CIO of Queensland State, and Australian Minister for Innovation. All 3 spoke about open-data and crowdsourcing initiatives, and one even promoted the increased collaboration between open-source and proprietary industry.
GIS Day at UVic
Morgan Thompson attended a GIS Day/career day event at the University of Victoria, and was invited to talk about “How to get a job in GIS”. The hour-long event featured 5 presenters each with 5-minute presentations introducing speaker, the company, and any tips for getting a job in the field. There was an open question period afterwards. The City of Victoria, B.C. Government, and GeoBC were represented. A lot of talk revolved around the migration of traditional desktop GIS uses for cartography and analysis, to web-based GIS applications for visualization and analytics.
PostGIS Day in Victoria
Jody Garnett and our team in the Victoria office decided to join the local community in acknowledging a homegrown champ – PostGIS! The tradition is to celebrate the day after GIS Day as “PostGIS Day”, so being good Canadians the celebration was held at a local pub. While I wasn’t there to see it, the pictures show there was some good banter over a few pints.
GIS Day at Ventura College
Ventura College and The Channel Islands Regional GIS Collaborative (CIRGIS) also hosted a GIS Day event, and Parker Spence was there to tell all of the attendees about the value of open source GIS! The event was held at Ventura College’s brand new Applied Sciences Building that served as an incredible venue for the event. You can check out pictures from the event on the CIRGIS Facebook page.
All of us at Boundless are delighted to see how GIS has exploded over the years. Geography is everywhere and has a hand in almost everything. We are proud to be a part of a global effort to promote geo-literacy. See you all next year!
