Girl power: YouTube stars join Lilly Singh’s challenge to end girl-on-girl bullying

YouTube star Lilly Singh is launching a new campaign under the #GirlLove banner to unite women and girls in an effort to combat girl-on-girl hate.

Singh launched the #GirlLove challenge via a video posted to her hugely popular YouTube channel. In the clip, Singh and a number of other female YouTube personalities (among them Shay Mitchell, Hannah Hart, Grace Helbig, Candee Johnson, Colleen Ballinger, and more) ask girls and women to join them in not hating on one another.

A series of segments see each YouTube celeb address the camera to speak on girl-on-girl hate and bullying, with references to their own life experiences. The women also comment on the positive female attributes they believe should be celebrated in the face of hatred, and the women they personally admire, including each other.

At the outset, Singh states the following on the #GirlLove initiative: “The sad reality is that girl-on-girl hate is such a big issue in schools, at work … [and] online, and it never made any sense to me, because as women we know how awesome other women can be.”

Singh wants her 7.4 million channel subscribers (84 percent of which are female, according to her), and girls and women everywhere, to participate in the challenge. You can do so by taking to Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to post a female positive tweet, pic, or status using the #GirlLove hashtag.

Singh claims that every dollar made from ‘The #GirlLove Challenge’ video — which she encourages YouTube users to share — will be donated to Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai’s Malala Fund female education charity.

Looking at the tweets that have already been posted using the hashtag, it seems that Singh’s campaign is gaining traction. Among its notable supporters are former America’s Next Top Model contestant and Bollywood star Nargis Fakhri, Tyra Banks, and Quantico star Priyanka Chopra.
