Just Cause 3 multiplayer is in development

When Just Cause 3 released a few weeks ago, the PC version was widely hailed as the definitive way to play the game, with stable framerates and shorter loading times. Soon, PC players will have another reason to feel satisfied with their choice of platform, as a multiplayer mod is in development.

Developed by the same team behind the famous Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod, Just Cause 3‘s multiplayer looks like it will deliver exactly what players are hoping for: open-world mayhem with several friends. The “We’re Back Again!” trailer mostly showcases vehicles and racing, with a shot of cars speeding down a dirt road as rockets rain down from above. Yes, that does indeed look like a Just Cause game. And with the popular grappling hook making for such an easy way to get around Just Cause 3‘s open world, this mod might actually make the case for using vehicles.

In November, we reported on the possible connection between Just Cause 3‘s Avalanche Studio and Shinra Technologies, which appeared to be a candidate for the creation of a Just Cause 3 multiplayer component. Now it seems very unlikely that this will ever come to fruition, and if it does, it would throw a potentially deadly wrench in the modders’ plans for the future. Avalanche supported the previous fan-made multiplayer mod for Just Cause 2, integrating it into the Steam release as official, free DLC.

Avalanche has been a very busy company, delegating development of Just Cause 3 to a satellite studio while the original team worked on Mad Max. The latter game didn’t set the world on fire like the film Fury Road, thanks in no small part to its September 1 release date — Metal Gear Solid V came out the same day.

No timetable has been given for Just Cause 3 multiplayer, but unless one of the console manufacturers repeat what Microsoft did with Fallout 4 mods, it’s pretty safe to say that it will only be available on PC.
