Crypt of the NecroDancer boogies to PlayStation 4, PS Vita in February

Indie developer Brace Yourself Games revealed that its rhythm-driven dungeon crawler Crypt of the NecroDancer will make its awaited console debut on the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in February.

Crypt of the NecroDancer will hit the PlayStation Network next month as a Cross-Buy download, ensuring that players will receive both the PS4 and Vita editions with a single purchase.

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a dungeon crawler variant that merges turn-based, Mystery Dungeon-styled gameplay with rhythm mechanics similar to the Rock Band and Guitar Hero franchises. Throughout the game, players battle through a series of randomly-generated dungeon layouts, killing any monsters they encounter and collecting dropped loot.

Unlike other dungeon crawlers, however, Crypt of the NecroDancer ties its gameplay to a backing beat. Characters and monsters move and attack in time to a background music track, requiring players to master strategy and timing in order to survive.

The PS4 and Vita versions of Crypt of the NecroDancer include all content previously featured in the game’s initial release for PC, Mac, and Linux platforms. The game boasts a single-player campaign in addition to leaderboards, trophies, and a daily challenge mode that pits players against unique level layouts every 24 hours.

New to the console ports of Crypt of the NecroDancer is an exclusive soundtrack from Shovel Knight composer Jake “virt” Kaufmann. The upcoming PS4 edition of Crypt of the NecroDancer also features compatibility with custom dance mat peripherals, transforming its beat-driven gameplay into a physical challenge in the vein of Konami’s Dance Dance Revolution series.

Developer Brace Yourself Games specifically notes that Crypt of the NecroDancer will make its “console debut” on the PS4 and Vita, suggesting that ports for other platforms are also in the works. Details regarding additional ports have not yet been announced.

Crypt of the NecroDancer will launch digitally via the PlayStation Network on February 2nd.
