Fox goes back to the well for 24 spinoff, Prison Break event series

What’s old is new again on Fox as the network turns to two tried-and-true properties for its latest series. It was announced today that Fox has officially greenlit the pilot for the new post-Jack Bauer 24 spinoff, 24:Legacy, as well as setting in motion a new event series for Prison Break that sees the original cast returning, according to Variety.

As the name confirms, Legacy will be related to the original series in name and spirit only, with none of the original cast returning. As Variety reports, the series will keep the real-time, ticking-clock device that helped amp up the drama of the original series.

The series will reportedly follow a military hero who returns home only to find himself wrapped up in a terrorist plot that threatens his own life along with the lives of thousands (or millions?) of others in a massively scaled terrorist attack. Though we don’t yet know who will star, the series is being produced by the original crew for 24, including executive producers Howard Gordon, Manny Coto, Evan Katz, and Brian Grazer.

The pilot is slated to begin shooting this winter, and, with the bigwigs involved in its production, looks likely to be picked up when it makes its way to TV screens.

As for Prison Break, the new event series will star original leads in Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell, who played Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows, respectively.

Since it was just announced at today’s Television Critics Association event, nothing is yet known about the plot of the event series, but Variety reports that Fox Television group co-chairmen/CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman teased that the new event series will be a sequel of sorts that picks up a few years after the show’s fourth and final season concluded.

While details are scarce, if we had to venture a guess on the plot based on the original series, may we suspect that some sort of prison break could be involved? As with 24:Legacy, the new event series is being produced by the original team, including executive producers Paul T. Scheuring, Neal Moritz, Marty Adelstein, and Dawn Olmstead. Scheuring will also serve as writer and showrunner, according to the report.

No details have yet emerged on when either series will premiere, so stay tuned for further updates as they emerge.
