Is the new Civic more powerful than Honda is letting on?

The 10th-generation Honda Civic has been wildly praised for its modern styling, confident driving dynamics, and premium interior, but the car may have one more ace up its sleeve.

On EX-T trims and above, the all-new model is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine officially rated at 174 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. However, the gurus over at Hondata recently put the new Civic on a dynamometer, which rated the compact at 177 hp and 190 lb-ft. Considering Honda’s official figures came directly from the engine and Hondata’s measurements came from the axles — which typically nets lower numbers due to parasitic losses from the drivetrain — the results are eye-catching to say the least.

Admittedly, vehicles equipped with continuously variable transmissions are notoriously hard to test on a dyno, and the car’s torque converter may have amplified the low end numbers a bit. Regardless, the new Civic is a potent everyday driver.

Hondata also took the tenth-gen Civic to a a nearby track for a showdown against the ninth-gen Civic Si, and the results were surprising. Despite the Si’s advantage in top-end power, the 2016 Civic was actually 0.2 seconds quicker through the eighth-mile. Looks like this grocery-getter has some pop after all.

With the 2016 Civic sedan on sale now and the Civic coupe headed for showrooms in March, we turn our attention to the highly-anticipated Civic hatchback. In recent years, five-door Civics have been enjoyed by our friends across the pond only, but Honda recently confirmed that the hatch will be shipped from its factory in Swindon, England, to the United States for the first time ever.

A concept that closely previews the production five-door will be revealed at the 2016 Geneva Auto Show next month. You can read more about the Civic hatch here.
