Vertner Woodson Tandy, New York’s first licensed black architect, designed this home, named Villa Lewaro. His client was Madame C. J. Walker, a successful African American businesswoman in the cosmetics industry. This photo was recently featured in a Picture This blog post: “Exploring Place in African American History.”
