Fort Pike was built following the War of 1812 to protect the Rigolets, a strait that connects the Gulf of Mexico to Lake Pontchartrain. The fort was used to protect New Orleans and the Gulf Coast from future invasion. In the 1820’s the fort held Seminole Indians as prisoners during the Seminole Wars. During the Civil War, the Confederates held the fort for a year until the Union captured New Orleans in 1862. In 1864 the Union used the fort as the training site for the United States Colored Troops.

The fort was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
