There’s no getting away from presidential elections, whether that be in real life or on HBO’s Veep. The season five trailer was released by the premium network today, and it features campaign issues, in addition to more problems for the president’s administration.
If you’ve been wondering whether President Selina Meyer (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) will be elected to the office she took over after her predecessor resigned, HBO’s answer is still “maybe!” The trailer picks up in the middle of the tied election shown in the season four finale, and the Meyer team is scrambling to come up with their next move. While they may not be the most competent, they won’t lose their sense of humor. Brainstorming, for example, leads to some very absurd ideas, including “drive sober” and “take a s*** without getting a hernia.”

On top of the ongoing election issues, the president will have to continue dealing with national crises, from Chinese hackers accessing White House files to the economy tanking. Meanwhile, her love life will have some interesting developments as well, namely a hookup with a character played by John Slattery (Mad Men) in spite of her protests that she’s “not that kind of a president.” There’s no question that Meyer will have her work cut out for her as she tries to prove she’s “presidential.”
In addition to releasing the trailer, HBO also revealed the season’s official poster. In it, President Meyer gets her own spin on the iconic image used by the Obama campaign in 2008. Of course, hers is more entertaining than inspiring. The predominant message is a simple “Maybe!”
Along with Louis-Dreyfus, the series co-stars Anna Chlumsky, Reid Scott, Timothy Simons, Sufe Bradshaw, and Gary Cole. Veep season five premieres on HBO at 10:30 p.m. ET on April 24.
