G.Skill announces a new DDR4 RAM series as an answer to a question nobody was asking

G.Skill may be focused on high-end enthusiast rigs by day, but by night, the Taiwanese hardware manufacturing company is serving up justice … in the form of DDR4 RAM for laptops and small form factor (SFF) PCs.

More specifically, the RAM is for those with computers requiring SO-DIMM modules, G.Skill’s Ripjaws DDR4-3000 is available in a variety of flavors, up to 32GB.

“Foreseeing the growing demand of high-end gaming laptops and small form-factor PCs, G.SKILL continues the development of higher speed DDR4 SO-DIMM memory,” the company proclaimed in a press release this week. “Today, G.SKILL is excited to raise the maximum support of DDR4 SO-DIMM frequency to 3000MHz CL16. Most importantly, this frequency speed is achieved at a low voltage of 1.2V, while DDR4-3000MHz kits typically require a higher 1.35V.”

G.Skill claims that by taking advantage of a lower voltage spec, your thermal footprint won’t be as significant. Unfortunately, the 0.15V difference probably won’t matter that much in the grand scheme of things.

The company goes on to say that the DDR4-3000 kits bear XMP 2.0 support for Skylake, indicating that overclocking probably isn’t out of the question, assuming you don’t mind butchering your laptop battery with some unsolicited tweaking.

The Ripjaws DDR4-3000 SO-DIMM will ship later on this month as 16GB single modules, 16GB kits (8GBx2), 8GB single modules, and 32GB (16GBx2) kits at presently undisclosed costs. All options pack a CL latency rating of 16-18-18-43 and will be obtainable through G.Skill’s “authorized distribution partners.”
