On August 3, 1804 The Lewis and Clark Expedition met here with members of the Oto and Missouria Native American tribes. This was the first official council between representatives of the United States and the Oto and Missouri Indians. Lewis and Clark named the bluffs, Council Bluffs. The site is today called Fort Atkinson.
