Robert Downey Jr. to give Spider-Man: Homecoming a boost

Tom Holland may be headlining his first Marvel film with Spider-Man: Homecoming, but he won’t be left entirely to his own devices. It turns out that the superhero flick will also feature Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, according to THR.

Homecoming won’t be the first time the two characters are seen sharing the screen; both Spider-Man and Iron Man are part of the upcoming, superhero-packed Captain America: Civil War. While key plot details haven’t been revealed yet, Civil War apparently sets up whatever interactions the two will have in Homecoming. Not much is known about what to expect in the latest Spider-Man flick either, other than the fact that it will focus on Peter Parker’s teenage years. Based on that, it would be interesting to see Iron Man serve as a mentor to the budding superhero.

Previous iterations of Spider-Man haven’t exactly been runaway box office successes, so it’s clear that Marvel is approaching his reintroduction very carefully and strategically. Audiences will first get a taste of the new web-slinger as he’s ushered into the MCU in Civil War, and then Downey’s familiar face (and armor) will add appeal to Homecoming. It sounds like a recipe for success, but of course, we’ll have to wait and see how it plays out.

Along with Downey, Holland will be joined by Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Zendaya as a female lead, Tony Revolori, and Laura Harrier. Jon Watts is directing from a script by Vacation writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. The film is being produced by Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal.

Production on Homecoming is set to begin in June, and the film is slated to open on July 7, 2017. In the meantime, Marvel lovers can look forward to the May 7 release of Civil War.
