Spotify matches users with their inner Game of Thrones character in fun new feature

Think of yourself as more of a musical Ned Stark, or are you — like me, apparently — a lowly Theon Greyjoy? Spotify has added a new Game of Thrones feature which allows fans to match with their favorite characters’ music taste.

Regardless of who you identify with, the company has made each of its playlists, which are based on characters’ hypothetical taste in modern music, available to the public. Users without a Spotify account can get in on the action too, via a short musical quiz.

Similar to the playlist project that the streaming music giant launched with Disney for the recent Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the new feature offers interesting insights into what each character would listen to were they around today, or even still on the show. Many of the characters who have playlists have already been killed off on the legendarily bloody series.

Honestly, the folks behind these playlists really seem to have hit the nail on the head with the majority of their song picks. Cersei Lannister, for example, shows her age and love of pop music with hits from Madonna and Whitney Houston, while her late husband Robert — who (spoiler alert) was killed by a wild boar — apparently would have enjoyed himself some Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The classiest of the bunch? Of course that would be Tyrion Lannister, who has himself a nice little playlist of classical music and jazz to read all those books to.

The curators also did well to add a few jokey playlists in the mix, with face-changing murderer Jaqen H’ghar getting a list of classic ’90s hip-hop, and Daenerys Targaryen getting a list of gritty-sounding dance pop, set off by the track Dragon Queen by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

But Kristian Nairn, the actor who plays hulking single-word character, Hodor, is the only one who has some of his own music on his character’s playlist, with one of the part-time DJ’s electronic beats making it onto Hodor’s list of extremely one-note dance music.

The new playlists come as a push to get more people to watch the latest season of Game of Thrones when it hits HBO this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, not that most of us with an internet connection needed a reminder.
