While tablets have grown in popularity over the last few years as entertainment devices, there is no denying that laptops are still useful as productivity devices for modern professionals and students. Capable 2-in-1s like the HP Envy Spectre 360x offer both functions, if you’re willing to compromise a little. With a sleek chrome exterior that evokes the Macbook’s singular look, the Spectre makes for a nice fashion accessory. How does it perform, though? Our reviewer found it to be a fine laptop, though its heft made it a bit uncomfortable to use as a tablet. Macbook ($950)

The Macbook has been one of the defining laptops of the last decade, and the latest iteration is a worthy successor to the name. The new model has a 12-inch screen, but the measurement the really matters is depth — the new Macbook is almost unthinkably thin. While it is not the most powerful laptop on the market — definitely don’t buy it if you intend to play high-end games — it is a beautiful device, and very convenient for travel. We’re big fans of the Chromecast here, having awarded it Best Product of 2013, and for good reason. Chromecast makes it easy to switch to streaming, with hundreds of apps including Netflix and Hulu, and a blissfully intuitive interface. Best of all, the device is tiny, making it suitable for home or portable use.
