HP Envy Spectre 360x ($650)

Laptop or tablet: truly the choice defines our times. While tablets have grown in popularity over the last few years as entertainment devices, there is no denying that laptops are still useful as productivity devices for modern professionals and students. Capable 2-in-1s like the HP Envy Spectre 360x offer both functions, if you’re willing to compromise a little. With a sleek chrome exterior that evokes the Macbook’s singular look, the Spectre makes for a nice fashion accessory. How does it perform, though? Our reviewer found it to be a fine laptop, though its heft made it a bit uncomfortable to use as a tablet. The biggest problem we had with the Spectre was its price point — a problem solved by picking it up on sale. Read our full review here.

Macbook ($950)

macbook 12 inch product image

The Macbook has been one of the defining laptops of the last decade, and the latest iteration is a worthy successor to the name. The new model has a 12-inch screen, but the measurement the really matters is depth — the new Macbook is almost unthinkably thin. While it is not the most powerful laptop on the market — definitely don’t buy it if you intend to play high-end games — it is a beautiful device, and very convenient for travel. Apple’s signature Retina display is still an eye-pleaser, and allows for varied and vibrant colors that make watching movies or editing photos a delight. Read our full review here.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones ($110)

m50x headphones image

Studio-quality headphones have really become mainstream over the last decade, after Beats by Dre made over-ear monitors that the average consumer could actually afford. For those looking to graduate to something of audiophile quality, there are few options as good for the price as Audio-Technica’s ATH-M50x. Built with a sturdy frame that folds easily, the M50x headphones offer powerful bass and clear midrange. Despite their formidable size, the headphones aren’t overly heavy, and the soft cups allow for a comfortable fit. These headphones aren’t without their flaws, particularly when it comes to their narrow soundstage, but they are arguably the best choice for those looking to dip their toes into the world of high-quality headphones.

Vizio 50-inch 1080p LED smart TV ($450)

Ah, the television, the altar of the American home. Modern TVs are not only bigger than their ancestors and sport higher resolutions, but so-called “smart” TVs also tend to function as basic computers, ones outfitted with apps for streaming content directly from the internet. This 50-inch smart TV from Vizio offers pretty much everything one could want in a home theater system. The 1080p LED display offers crisp images with striking colors and deep shadows. The TV also comes with built-in Wi-Fi, as well as HDMI and USB ports, so users can browse the web and stream content through the TV or a connected device.

Google Chromecast ($22)

chromecast gen 1 image

We’re big fans of the Chromecast here, having awarded it Best Product of 2013, and for good reason. Cord cutting is becoming ever more popular, as people rise up against their cable company oppressors and seize the means of media consumption. Chromecast makes it easy to switch to streaming, with hundreds of apps including Netflix and Hulu, and a blissfully intuitive interface. Best of all, the device is tiny, making it suitable for home or portable use.
