Between the Streams: violent Wolverine, Pacific Rim 2, Slender Man movie, and more

Each week, DT’s newest show, Between the Streams, is your guide to all of the hottest, most important, and (of course) dumbest new developments in streaming and entertainment to recap the week that was. (Add us via RSS, iTunes, or Stitcher at the links above to take BtS on the road!)

This week we’ve got the usual full barrel of goodies, beginning with a whole new tone for Hugh Jackman’s last ride as everyone’s favorite clawed superhero, Wolverine. The third and final installment in the franchise — and Jackman’s final bow after 17 years — will reportedly be a rip-roaring, R-rated adventure. Producer Simon Kinberg told Collider that, not only will the new film be bloodier, it’s also expected to have a “Western tone,” and may or may not include Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Professor X.

“I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say about that,” Kinberg said regarding Stewart’s involvement. “I will agree with you that Patrick Stewart was rumored to be a part of that film. It takes place in the future, and as you and others have reported, it is an R-rated movie. It’s violent, it’s kind of like a Western in its tone. It’s just a very cool, different film.” Color us excited on all accounts. The yet-untitled third Wolverine film is slated to hit theaters in March 2017.

We also talk about ABC’s cancellation hit squad. The Disney-owned network axed long-runners like Castle and Nashville, as well as newcomers The Muppets, and Marvel’s Agent Carter. While some of these shows have been on the brink, Carter was an outright critical success, though it failed to gather the audience needed to keep it on ABC’s slate. That said, there have been outcries from fans for Netflix — which already has several Marvel series under its slate (and several more in the works) — to keep the series alive by bringing it into the streaming fold. We’ll have to wait and see how that turns out in the near future.

Elsewhere in the world of entertainment, the much maligned sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s epic monster movie, Pacific Rim, is getting something of a resurrection. Due to his jam-packed slate, del Torro is now out as director, replaced by Daredevil showrunner and producer Steven S. DeKnight. But the big news this week is that Jurassic World scribe Derek Connolly is stepping in to help rewrite/rework the script.

We also talk about the creepiest internet sensation of the age, Slender Man, which (who?) is getting a movie, as well as a possible role in the next American Horror Story. In addition, we pour over Neon Demon, Amazon Studios’ edgy/bizarre new film starring Elle Fanning. Finally, we have a special show for our Between the Cracks segment that’s near and dear to our hearts.
