Jack Jouett was best remembered for his June 3, 1781 night time ride of 40 miles from the Cuckoo Tavern to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. He rode to warn Governor Jefferson and the Virginia legislature of Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton’s surprise ride to capture them after spotting the Brits and deducing the plan.
Jouett rode the back roads and reached the Virginian politicians saving most of them from capture. Jouett’s quick thinking also securred injured Edward Stevens escape.
The legislature honored Juett by passing a resolution giving him a pair of pistols and a sword.
