Eizo’s new 27-inch ColorEdge monitors target hobbyists, prosumers, and real pros

Display manufacturer Eizo released two new 27-inch monitors for professionals and “aspiring creators.” If you’ve never heard of the company, it’s because Eizo mainly focuses on the business, commercial, and medical spaces. However, the company does provide a family of monitors dedicated to gaming, but that’s not where these two new products fall.

For starters, the new ColorEdge CG2730 is the professional-grade model of the duo while the ColorEdge CS2730 aims at hobbyists and “prosumers” that want the features of the ColorEdge lineup, but at a more affordable cost. Both panels promise 99 percent Adobe RGB coverage while the CG2730 also manages to cover 98 percent of the DCI-P3 color space used in post-production.

“Both monitors are equipped with Eizo’s unique digital uniformity equalizer technology (DUE) that ensures a Delta-E difference of 3 or less across the screen,” the company said on Friday. “This provides users with stable image display for color-critical work.”

As the table shows, there’s a slight difference between the two monitors hardware-wise. However, the CG2730 model comes with a shading “hood” that drapes over the top bezel and along the sides, blocking out a chunk of the local surrounding light. The calibration sensor is also embedded in the top bezel, which drops only when the user is color calibrating.

Note the use of an IPS panel. In-plane Switching technology is newer than the Twisted Nematic (TN) technology that was widely used before IPS came along. By using an IPS panel, displays are capable of producing richer colors and better viewing angles. In turn, those with TN panels provide faster response times and a higher brightness level. TN panels are good for PC gaming while IPS panels are ideal for graphic design, printing, photo editing, and so on.

According to the company, the two monitors sport a flattened design on the front, which includes electrostatic buttons instead of traditional buttons to keep that flat design intact. These switches are lit up using LEDs so they can be seen in dimly lit offices and other work environments.

“The bottom bezel of both monitors is approximately 46 percent slimmer and monitor depth is approximately 30 percent thinner compared to the previous model,” the company added. “The monitors’ weight was also reduced by 30 percent to just 8.9 kilograms (16.9 pounds), which when combined with the built-in carrying handle makes them easy to move to various locations or within the studio.”

The ColorEdge CG2730 and ColorEdge CS2730 will start shipping in November. Eizo did not provide pricing in its announcement, so stay tuned.
