Watch ‘Sherlock’ get the Honest Trailers treatment, complete with a clever trick

As popular as Sherlock is, it was only a matter of time before the hit BBC show became the latest video in Screen Junkies’ Honest Trailers series. The new trailer breaks down the best and worst of the show — which you’ll soon know as “Downton Crabby” — and even throws in a little trick (keep an eye out for Watson’s reaction faces).

Sherlock is “more than a rehash of public domain stories from the 1890s,” according to the trailer. Sure, it may be about the 200th time Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories have been brought to screen, but this time around, we get a self-professed “high-functioning sociopath” who blogs, texts, and inspires words to float around him as he investigates. And that’s just part of what makes it so great.

Sherlock is billed as a mystery series, but don’t be fooled — it is really “a superhero show in disguise.” The trailer backs up this claim, pointing to its key ingredients: “a superpowered main character, a trusty sidekick, a city to protect, and great bad guys.” Who can argue with that?

As for the hero and his sidekick, we get a look back at their dysfunctional relationship. The narrator points out the “endless abuse” that Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) puts up with from Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch); it even goes so far as to describe Watson as Holmes’ “Cumberbitch.” Harsh.

With the show’s lead actor having blown up in recent years, the trailer also attempts to answer the question of “Why is Benedict Cumberbatch in everything these days?” We get a chance to see a lot of reasons, from his reverse smile to the way he makes us care about a character that is “all brain and no heart.” As the narrator points out, you can’t help but love him and his “shark face” — not to mention Sherlock itself.
