United cutting costs, tour museums from home, quarant-camping, and more by Nick Reyes

United cutting costs, tour museums from home, quarant-camping, and more –

This week’s Frequent Miler week in review around the web brings us tips on finding places to get away from it all (and everyone else), how to tour a museum from your couch, a top Prestige tip, United’s eye on cost-cutting, and more.

Want to Travel *AND* Simultaneously Self-Quarantine? Go Camping!

Your camping experience probably won’t look like this.

Camping is like bowling for me: it sounds like a good time, I have fond memories of doing it with friends when I was younger, I always seem to remember myself being a heck of a lot better at it than I am, and I always seem to forget how badly my arm aches after three games. Gosh, I want to be a camper. My wife and I try every few years and every time we are reminded what bad campers we are. Still, it’s been a couple of years since our last attempt and this post from Becky at sightDOING couldn’t be more timely for many given the current circumstances. I’m intrigued by this, but the fact that I essentially live in the woods means that I won’t soon feel cramped enough to forget what a bad camper I am.

Weird but true – Hilton hotel non-refundable rooms ARE refundable in the US!

Nothing to do with coronavirus policy here, this is just a rarely-discussed trick that can work wonders. We’ve written about it before once or twice before and now Head for Points stumbles on it anew. File this away as a nugget of wisdom to hold onto for when it makes sense in the future.

My Renewed Faith In Travel Insurance

I’m always highly skeptical of ticking one of those boxes to buy insurance for tickets — whether for flights or events. However, Keeping up with the Boneses shares a very positive outcome from doing just that when buying event tickets. I used to buy event tickets with my Citi Prestige card back when that offered missed event protection, but since it no longer does I’ll be more likely to consider this for future expensive ticket purchases (and more confident in Allianz for future travel insurance needs in general!).

United Airlines Hates Its Customers. For Short-Term Survival That’s a Good Thing.

View from the Wing covers how United’s change in leadership may spell B-U-M-M-E-R for customers while ultimately keeping the airline afloat in difficult times. With “difficult times” only compounding every day over the past week, we can all hope that he’s right. While some will root against one company or another to come out of the current situation intact, I know that competition is our ally in this game. I’m hopeful United and all the others can hold it together over the coming months even if that means the customer experience suffers in the short-term.

Stuck at Home? These 12 Famous Museums Offer Virtual Tours You Can Take on Your Couch (Video)

This article from Andrea Romano of Travel & Leisure via MSN Lifestyle takes a look at museums you can visit from your couch. I had no idea that Google Street View could take you on a tour of some museums and that others have complete vitrtual tours online. For folks at home with kids for the new few weeks looking for an educational experience along the way, some of these could be pretty cool.

I Downgraded My Citi Prestige Card And Confirmed Something Good

A good tip from Traveling 4 Miles: you can get your Prestige annual fee rebated even beyond 30 days after the fee posts. My guess is that this only works for 60 days after the fee posts, but it’s a good tip to keep in mind in case your anniversary passes and you haven’t yet used your travel credit or are waiting for a 4th night free rebate.

That’s it for this week around the web. Check back soon for this week’s last chance deals.
